Approximately 8-12 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year and approximately 5-9 million are euthanized. Shelter intakes are about evenly divided between those relinquished by owners and those picked up by animal control.

Suncoast Basset Rescue Inc. will take in an owner relinquish dog if we have the space and resources available to do so and if the relinquished animal meets our requirements in order that we can place the Basset. Bassets in shelters may be put to sleep due to the many dogs that come in to shelters on a daily basis due to pet overpopulation. Therefore, Bassets already in shelters are a priority for Suncoast, and we are not always able to get all of them out in time. We work hard to save as many dogs as we can.
For liability reasons, Suncoast Basset Rescue Inc. is unable to consider any dog that has bitten for placement through or with our rescue program. If you have any questions regarding this issue or extenuating circumstances, please contact SBR directly or explain the problem on the comment section of the Information Review Form. This information will then be reviewed by SBR and a determination made as to whether or not we can take the dog.
All dogs must be spayed or neutered at the time of surrender, (a Vet's statement is required). Un-spayed or Un-neutered dogs will be accepted into the program only if you are willing to make a donation to SBR to help cover the cost of these procedures. Depending on vaccine records, health issues and grooming needs of the dog, you may be asked for a donation to help us with the expenses involved in getting your dog ready for adoption.
Your dog must be in good general health. Medical conditions that are controlled by medication or diet may be acceptable depending on the severity of the condition and the quality of the dog's life. You must be honest about your dog's bad habits and behavioral problems. We can work with many things but only if we are aware of the problem from the start.
